Mexican-Heritage Ethnic Identity: How<i>Coco</i>Serves as Context for Ethnic Socialization

This study investigated the role of media as a context for ethnic socialization in Mexican-heritage families. We studied whether and how parents used Disney film Coco springboard to talk with their children about important cultural traditions, values, practices. Participants included 23 parent-child dyads. Children were kindergarten through fifth grade. Parents completed quantitative identity surveys individually, watched movie together, interviewed individually experiences conversations film. Results showed that identity, socialization, orientation toward Mexican or American associated Coco. Participants’ who scored high on scales discussed nuanced ways which representation related own practices experiences.
